He enrolled in a Sport Science Degree at the Nottingham Trent University and also enrolled on the FA Coaching License - Level III (UEFA B). In 2001 he was one of 6 (out of 26) coaches to pass the course. He continued to coach in the US during the summers of 2000 and 2001 and after graduating with his BSc Sport Science and Management, came back out to the US for the summer of 2002.

He also met and married his wife, Shannon in 2005 and has since welcomed the birth of his son Calum (2008) and daughter Piper (2011).
Alan went onto become the Executive Director of Coaching as his responsibilities were increased just beyond the field, players, and coaches. Alan was also recruited by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as the state director and staff instructor. In 2008, Alan was added to the USC/NSCAA National Staff and has been instructed high-level licenses for the NSCAA and USSF on a regular basis.

He brought this back to the USA and set-up a non-profit promoting youth sports participation through well-researched programs.
Alan launched the Connect After School program in 2015, as part of Global Sport Solutions LLC. GSS was started in 2007 to serve local sports clubs, coaches, and players with education, camps, and tours to Europe.
